We’re well into summer now. The days are long, the sun is bright, and summer traditions of things like watermelon, ice cream, and swimming are well under way. Also, it’s super hot — but I don’t have to tell you that.
I love how entwined the seasons are with everything in our lives. From the foods we crave, the hobbies we pick up, the decorations in our homes, and even the scents we enjoy fluctuate with the weather. In the fall and winter things are heavy and comforting — thick blankets, hot soups and chilies, and full-bodied aromas with spicy undertones of cinnamon and clove dominate the shorter days and longer nights of the cooler seasons. But it’s summertime now, and in summer we’re all about keeping things light and fresh! Tart lemonades, cold fruit, light salads, and bright scents fill our senses.
In lieu of using toxic air fresheners, I like to diffuse essential oils to scent the air. Lately I’ve been playing around with different scent combinations to come up with aromatic blends that smell bright, fresh, and perfect for summer. I’ve landed on a few blends that I really like and wanted to share them with you!
Our home is fairly open, and our living room is open to the kitchen, dining area, and hall, so it’s a big space to scent. If you are diffusing in a smaller space or around children or pets, you may want to start with fewer drops at the same ratios. You can always add more if the scent isn’t strong enough for you. You should also play around with the diffuser blends to see if there’s a combo you love! Play with the ratios, use substitutions, have fun with it. One of the many great things about diffusing essential oils is that the smell is totally customizable to your preferences and needs! All you need is a cool air diffuser, essential oils, and water (preferably distilled, but tap will do).

Summer Essential Oil Diffuser Blends
Summer Lovin’
3 drops passionate blend
3 drops wild orange
3 drops bergamot
This blend is fruity and fun with just a touch of spice. It ignites feelings of passion, joy, self-confidence, and excitement while counteracting negative feelings of boredom and disinterest. It also works to purify the air while energizing and revitalizing. This one is my personal favorite of the bunch.
Summer Fun
4 drops cedarwood
5 drops lime
Earthy and bright at the same time, this is a fun twist that is a little unexpected. The citrus notes of the lime pairs very well with the cedarwood. This blend is relaxing and refreshing. It promotes emotional well-being and uplifts the mood while cleansing the air. It also naturally repels insects — and we all have too many of those around in the summer!
Take a Hike
1 drop cedarwood
2 drops white fir
3 drops lime
This blend is another fun twist combining cedarwood and lime, but it brings in more of the forest with the addition of white fir. This blend reduces stress and evokes feelings of stability, empowerment, and energy. The aroma is stimulating and refreshing and helps bring about emotional balance.
Citrus Blast

2 drops lime
2 drops grapefruit
2 drops bergamot
Full of juicy citrus notes, this one is hard to beat as a fresh summer smell. The aroma is uplifting and promotes a positive mood, increases motivation, calms and soothes, and supports healthy respiratory function.* Thanks to the powerful cleansing qualities of citrus, it also purifies and cleanses the air.
Summer and Spice
2 drops joyful blend
2 drops black pepper
3 drops lemon
Just the right amount of sweetness and spice with the bright notes of lemon, warmth of black pepper, and light floral scents of joyful blend. This uplifting blend is stimulating and reduces feelings of stress and anxiety while promoting feelings of confidence and self-worth. It purifies the air while supporting an overall positive and energizing mood.
Try some of these and let me know what you think!
