Fall is my favorite season. There are things I like about all four seasons, but there are none that I love quite like fall. One of the best things about fall is the food, hands down. Fall is when things get sweet and spicy, warm and comforting, and filled with the flavors of fall fruits and veggies.
Nothing says fall to me quite like cinnamon, and few things go as well with cinnamon as apples. I’ll take cinnamon apples any way you throw ’em at me. By themselves in a bowl. In a hot apple pie. In apple bread. Or in this cinnamon apple crumble.
The first time I made this dish, it was the last day of official summer and 90 degrees outside. While summer was giving its last grand hurrah, my kitchen was filled with the sights, scents, and tastes of autumn. You can’t go wrong with that.
I like this crumble just as-is, but you can also jazz it up a little with some extras. Drizzle caramel on top. Add chopped pecans or raisins to the apples. Serve with vanilla ice cream. There’s also an optional adjustment to the recipe below that turns it into a caramel apple crumble instead. The possibilities are only limited by your creativity!
Here’s the Recipe:
Cinnamon Apple Crumble
Ingredients
Apples
4-6 medium apples (tart and firm works best), peeled
1/2 cup pure cane sugar OR 1/2 cup caramel sauce
1 generous tsp cinnamon
2 tbsp flour
pinch of salt
Optional add-ins: 1/4 cup of raisins, chopped nuts, dried cranberries, etc
Topping
1 cup oatmeal
1/4 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup flour
1/2 cup butter, melted
Instructions
Butter a 9″ pie plate and preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
Peel and chop the apples into 1″ cubes. Mix together the apples, sugar or caramel, cinnamon, flour, and any optional add-ins. Pour into the pie plate.
Mix together ingredients for topping. You’ll need to get your hands a little dirty for this next step! Sprinkle the oatmeal topping evenly over the apples. It does work best if you do this with your hands.
Bake for 45 minutes-1 hour until apples are tender and topping is lightly browned. Allow to cool about 5 minutes before serving (unless you want a burnt tongue). Serve alone or with ice cream, whipped cream, or a drizzle of caramel or chocolate.
Eating on a cool fall day not required but highly recommended.
Cheers
